The phrase started showing up in the early 1900s, but the feeling behind it is older. In England, roses were tied to prosperity and good outcomes, especially in gardens. If something “came up roses,” it meant it turned out better than expected, like everything bloomed in your favor.

There’s also a theatrical angle people point to. In old stage productions, if a performance went really well, actors would sometimes get showered with roses. So “coming up roses” became tied to success, applause, things working out.

Either way, it always carries that contrast underneath it.
