Something split open…
a seam I’d sewn shut
with the thread of years and forgetting.
And in it spilled
the scent of late summer hydrangeas
the hint of a voice
I no longer hear,
the soft panic of belonging
to a time I can’t return to.

This is the heartspur:
not pain, exactly,
but the echo of it
not memory,
but its shadow passing
through the field
before you realize
you’re standing in one.

And nothing has happened
not really.
Except the way
you suddenly remember
what it means
to feel too much
for no reason
you can explain.

This piece was inspired by a word that I fell in love with after reading a book. The word is “Heartspur” which means an unexpected surge of emotion in response to a seemingly innocuous trigger…the distinctive squeal of a rusty fence, a key change in an old pop song, the hint of certain perfume…which feels all the more intense because you can’t quite pin it down.
